چکیده

Context. The presence of magnetic fields in the crust of neutron stars causes a non-spherically symmetric temperature distribution. The strong temperature dependence of the magnetic diffusivity and thermal conductivity, together with the heat generated by magnetic dissipation, couple the magnetic and thermal evolution of NSs, that cannot be formulated as separated one–dimensional problems. Aims. We study the mutual influence of thermal and magnetic evolution in a neutron star’s crust in axial symmetry. Taking into account realistic microphysical inputs, we find the heat released by Joule effect consistent with the circulation of currents in the crust, and we incorporate its effects in 2–dimensional cooling calculations. Methods. We solve the induction equation numerically using a hybrid method (spectral in angles, but a finite–differences scheme in the radial direction), coupled to the thermal diffusion equation. To improve the boundary conditions, we also revisit the envelope stationary solutions updating the well known Tb − Ts–relations to include the effect of 2–D heat transfer calculations and new microphysical inputs. Results. We present the first long term 2–dimensional simulations of the coupled magneto-thermal evolution of neutron stars. This substantially improves previous works in which a very crude approximation in at least one of the parts (thermal or magnetic diffusion) has been adopted. Our results show that the feedback between Joule heating and magnetic diffusion is strong, resulting in a faster dissipation of the stronger fields during the first 105 − 106 years of a NS’s life. As a consequence, all neutron stars born with fields larger than a critical value (> 5×1013G) reach similar field strengths (≈ 2−3×1013G) at late times. Irrespectively of the initial magnetic field strength, after 106 years the temperature becomes so low that the magnetic diffusion timescale becomes longer than the typical ages of radio–pulsars, thus resulting in apparently no dissipation of the field in old NS. We also confirm the strong correlation between the magnetic field and the surface temperature of relatively young NSs discussed in preliminary works. The effective temperature of models with strong internal toroidal components are systematically higher than those of models with purely poloidal fields, due to the additional energy reservoir stored in the toroidal field that is gradually released as the field dissipates.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

Exploring jet-launching conditions for supergiant fast X-ray transients

Context. In the magneto-centrifugal mechanism for jet formation, accreting neutron stars are assumed to produce relativistic jets only if their surface magnetic field is weak enough (B ∼ 108 G). However, the most common manifestation of neutron stars are pulsars, whose magnetic field distribution peaks at B ∼ 10 G. If the neutron star magnetic field has at least this strength at birth, it must ...

The Thermal Evolution of Ultramagnetized Neutron Stars

Using recently calculated analytic and numerical models for the thermal structure of ultramagnetized neutron stars, we estimate the effects that ultrastrong magnetic fields B ≥ 10 G have on the thermal evolution of a neutron star. Understanding this evolution is necessary to interpret models that invoke “magnetars” to account for soft γ-ray emission from some repeating sources. Subject headings...

Magneto–rotational and Thermal Evolution of Magnetars with Crustal Magnetic Fields

The interpretation of Soft–Gamma–Repeaters (SGRs) and Anomalous X–Ray Pulsars (AXPs) as Magnetars (Thompson & Duncan 1996) raises again the issue of the generation of the ultra–strong magnetic fields (MFs) in neutron stars (NSs) and the related question of where these fields are anchored: in the core, penetrating the whole star, or confined to the crust. Recently, Heyl & Kulkarni (1998) conside...

Thermal Evolution of Isolated Neutron Stars

After a brief summary of neutron star cooling theory I present results which emphasize the importance of baryon pairing in the neutron star core. I show how the thermal evolution may be totally controlled by pairing for models which include only nucleons and models containing also hyperons. Finally, I consider the thermal evolution of ultramagnetized neutron stars whose existence has been infer...
